Preschool Program (2 Years to 5 Years)

The La Maternelle NYC Preschool Program invites children into a vibrant, bilingual world where curiosity, creativity, and confidence blossom each day. As children transition from early exploration to purposeful learning, we guide them with warmth, structure, and a curriculum designed to nurture both l’esprit and le cœur.

A Bilingual Journey of Discovery

At this stage, children are eager to express themselves, ask questions, and make sense of the world around them. Our curriculum—rich in couleurs, formes, lettres, and nombres—is taught in both French and English, allowing children to absorb language naturally through songs, stories, conversation, and play. This dual‑language environment strengthens cognitive flexibility, deepens cultural awareness, and builds a foundation for lifelong bilingualism.

Learning Through Play, Exploration, and Expression

Every day offers opportunities for children to explore, create, and collaborate. Our classrooms are thoughtfully arranged to encourage independence and joyful engagement. Children participate in:

  • Artistic expression through drawing, painting, sculpting, and imaginative play
  • Hands-on math and science activities that spark early reasoning and problem‑solving
  • Music and movement that develop rhythm, coordination, and body awareness
  • Storytelling and early literacy experiences that expand vocabulary and ignite a love of reading

These experiences cultivate both fine and gross motor skills while nurturing each child’s emerging sense of identity and capability.

Building Autonomy and Essential Life Skills

As children grow, so does their desire to do things “all by myself.” We honor this developmental leap by guiding them through essential self-care routines, including apprentissage de la propreté (potty training), dressing, tidying, and managing personal belongings. These daily practices foster autonomy, resilience, and self‑assurance—qualities that empower children far beyond the classroom.

Social-Emotional Growth and Character Development

For our older preschoolers, we place special emphasis on the virtues that shape thoughtful, compassionate citizens. Through group projects, shared responsibilities, and guided conversations, children learn:

  • Respect (respect) for themselves, their peers, and their environment
  • Cooperation (coopération) as they work together toward common goals
  • Patience (patience) in taking turns and listening to others
  • Kindness (gentillesse) in words, actions, and problem‑solving

These values are woven into daily routines, helping children build meaningful friendships and navigate social interactions with confidence and empathy.

Preparing for the Next Chapter

As children approach kindergarten readiness, our curriculum expands to include deeper explorations in language, mathematics, science, and the arts. We encourage independent thought, curiosity, and a genuine soif de connaissance—a thirst for knowledge. By the time they leave our program, children are not only academically prepared but emotionally grounded, socially confident, and eager for the adventures ahead.
